Description

Philip Jean c 1790. Maria Duchess of Gloucester, grand-daughter of Robert Walpole. It was painted late in the 18th century after an earlier work c. 1770. It is set in the original locket frame with a hair panel reverse bearing the initial ‘M’ and a coronet. It is 3" high. .Maria was a granddaughter of the famous Robert Walpole. She was illegitimate and was kept out of society till she married the 2nd. Earl Waldegrave in 1759. After his death she married Prince William Henry, Duke of Gl;oucester . George III disapproved of this marriage and would not allow her to come to court. Their son, Prince William Frederick, married his cousin The Princess Mary in 1816.
