19th Century Dressing Box ( c. 1872 )

The box, of kingwood, is brass bound with triple rows of brass stringing to the top and front. The lid opens to a leather and velvet lined interior fitted with mirror and billet doux compartments within the lid and various silver gilt fittings and equipage. The top tray is removable to storage below. The drawer beneath is fully fitted with velvet for necklaces, earrings, rings. etc.
The silver gilt and glass fitting bear hallmarks for Thomas Whitehouse London 1871-1872 who is recorded as a boxmaker and probably made this box. The other items predate the box with the hallmark of London 1821-1822 and maker’s initials C.R. Note some of the glassware is damaged. The lock bears the name J.T.
