Description:

A superb quality Early George I period Secretaire Tallboy in highly figured Walnut, crossbanded and feather banded, the cavetto moulded cornice above three small and three full width graduated drawers flanked by reeded canted corners, the base with a fitted secretaire drawer and three further full width graduated drawers, the bottom drawer having a sunburst, the whole raised on shaped bracket feet. Ca. 1720

Formerly and by descent in the collection of Walter W. Hales, Riverside Drive, New York City and dispatched to H.M. King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, (The Late Queen Mother) at Buckingham Palace to assist with the War effort March 25th 1941 and where it was kept in the vaults until after the War when this was given to His Majesty’s equerry, a nephew of W.W. Hales, by George VI so that it should stay in the same family.
This piece has with it the original engraved metal plaque and stamped envelope which accompanied the Tallboy on its return trip to Great Britain.
