‘Romantic River View, possibly the Rhine’ oil on panel - 11x8.75ins William Muller was a painter & watercolourist. Born in Bristol, the son of a Prussian refugee. As a young man Muller was apprenticed to J.B.Pyne, but the indentures were cancelled after two years. He painted in & around Bristol & visited Wales 1833. Between 1834-35 travelled up the Rhine to Switzerland, Venice, and Florence & Rome. He made many sketches & drawings on his travels, which he later worked up into finished paintings. He was especially enthralled by Venice, of which he painted many of his best pictures. He visited Greece, Egypt, and Malta & Naples between 1838-39, and then moved to London. He went to Turkey with an archaeological expedition 1843-45. William developed a heart condition and died aged only 33 in 1845. Muller exhibited at RA 1833-45, BI and SS. His style in both oil & watercolour was rapid, accurate and confident. He is best known for his Venetian & Middle Eastern scenes. Exhibitions of his work were held in Birmingham 1896, RA 1934 and Bristol 1962 |
