Description

Ernest Walbourn was born into a wealthy household in 1871, his family owned estates in Australia and could afford to give him a formal artistic training. From 1895 Walbourn began exhibiting at the Royal Academy and at the other major London exhibitions, his work was widely admired and he was quick to make arrangements with two London West End dealers (W. W. Sampson & Louis Wolfe), who sold most of his work. The printing reproduction rights were highly sought after too, and several Swiss companies re-produced his work. In 1906 Walbourn married the artist Eva Knight who helped with the backgrounds of his larger canvases before becoming an accomplished artist in her own right. Ultimately it was Walbourn’s talent of capturing charming scenes of English country life, often at the height of summer, with an assured yet light touch that won him universal appeal.
