Description

A member of an Edinburgh family of painters and decorators ad the great-great-grandson of the artist James Norie, he was a prolific and popular painter of military subjects. He kept a studio at Aldershot from about 1870 so as to study his material at first hand, and he exhibited at the R.A. from 1876-1889. His work is usually strictly factual, but occasionally he rose to more impressive and poetic levels.
He illustrated ‘The Memoirs of the 10th Royal Hussars, 1891 by R.S. Lidell and his work is in the Victorian and Albert Museum; The India Office Library: and the National Army Museum
