Description

A fine George III mahogany chamber writing table attributed to Gillows of Lancaster. The rounded rectangular top with reeded edge and retaining excellent original colour and patina. Below a cock-beaded frieze with drawer with turned mahogany knob handles, with opposing dummy drawer and cock beaded sides raised on ring turned reeded legs terminating in castors. This type of table was originally supplied by Gillows for T W Egerton Esq. of Tatton Park, Cheshire, circa 1811 and for other commissions during the early 19th century.

Gillows of Lancaster were probably the most celebrated of all English furniture makers. They were established in the early 18th century, and pieces made by Gillows are very desirable and extremely sought after. The Gillows archives refers to a “Chamber writing table” ref 344/14; 4 of which were supplied to T W Egerton Esq of Tatton Park Cheshire in 1811.
