Queen Victoria,Coronation, silver medal,1838

( 1838) Britain

Description

Coronation of Queen Victoria, silver medal, 1838 by B. Pistrucci, 36 mm (BHM 1801). Some minor marks, otherwise about extremely fine.

The Coronation ceremony was held in Westminster Abbey, and lasted from Victoria's arrival at half-past eleven until a quarter to four in the afternoon. The Annual Register comments upon the grand attire of some of the Foreign Ambassadors, most notably Prince Esterhazy whose dress, down to his very boot-heels, sparkled with diamonds. Due to lack of rehearsal, various errors occurred throughout the proceedings, perhaps the most unfortunate involved the Archbishop of Canterbury forcing the ring on to the wrong finger of the Queen. This caused an hours delay at the end of the ceremony whilst the Queen had her hand bathed in ice cold water in an effort to coax the ring off again.
This is the official Coronation medal, silver examples of which were thrown about at the ceremony by the Treasurer of the Household.
