Description

A wonderful example of English naive painting, this large pair of watercolour "pigeon portraits" instantly engages the attention, with their vivid colours, simple composition, and charmingly quirky details. The birds are shown, typically, in profile, and in great detail, with lovingly observed markings and brilliant coral-coloured feet, and are the central image of each painting. Each bird is set against a luscious green landscape, bordered by a large tree, with little architectural details of windmill, church, house and castle enlivening the scene. Flocks of birds (pigeons??) can be seen in the sky, and at the bottom of each painting is the date, 1890, and an inscription 1st / 2nd PRIZE FROM "BLACKPOOL".

The paintings are on paper marked "Wright & Fitton", and are in their original rosewood-veneered frames with gilt slips, with the original glass.

English, circa 1890.
