Description
Orford Castle built by King Henry the second, in mid to late 12th century was positioned to ward off the threat of coastal invasions.
Orford Castle is remarkable in two respects, it has a unique shape and planning,it is also the earliest castle whose entire building accounts survive.
Of the original Castle built,only the magnificent keep remains today.
It was the location Castle for the film A Lion in Winter,1968, starring Peter o'Toole,
and Katherine Hepburn.
It is now preserved by English Heritage.
Henry Bright painted Orford Castle in 1857.
Henry Bright was born in Saxmundham,Suffolk in 1810.
Norwich school landscape painter and watercolourist, he studied with John Berney Crome, 1794-1842) and was apprenticed to Alfred Stannard(1806-89).In 1836 he moved to London.
He Exhibited at the New Society of Painters in watercolours,and the Royal Academy.
Henry Bright established many titled pupils and Patrons, which Included Queen Victoria, and Her Imperial Highness the Grand Duchess Maria of Russia.
Troughout his career in London,Bright maintained links with the Norwich artists.
