NUDE BATHING

WILLIAM ETTY R.A.

1787-1849 Signed & insc. with title verso
Oil on board Tondo 9 ½ inches

Famous Victorian painter of nudes, historical and classical subjects. He was born in 1787, the son of a baker and mill owner. Etty was apprenticed to a printer in Hull before moving to London c. 1805. He entered The Royal Academy Schools and studied under Sir Thomas Lawrence. Etty exhibited 138 works at the R.A., 77 at The British Institute and 17 works at the Royal Society of British Artists. He was much admired in his lifetime for his large mythological subjects but much of his artistic career was devoted to painting the female nude. His luscious, sensual sketches frequently scandalised the Victorian public.

Works in many British public collections, including:
York City Art Gallery; British Museum; Victoria & Albert Museum; Tate; National Gallery of Ireland; Birmingham; Leeds & Manchester City Art Galleries.

Bibl.: William Etty - Dennis Farr

NB. The frame is inscribed with the name A W Bacon, a well known collector of Etty's works.
