Haymarket, Kings Theatre, subscribers season ticket,

( 1774) Britain

Description

Haymarket, Kings Theatre, subscribers season ticket, 1774, by G. Vitalba after Zuccarelli, a rural Italian idyll, a peasant family being entertained by a musical interlude of children, THE KINGS THEATRE/ IN THE HAYMARKET, 10th Feby 1774, rev. No 477/ Mr Crawford/ Subscriber, 237 x 247 mm. Minor repairs, otherwise good very fine.

The sumptuous nature of the ticket reflects the affluence of the audience. Prices were always higher at the opera than the playhouse. In 1721-2 annual subscriptions were introdued at twenty guineas for fifty performances. The musical allusion of the ticket reflects the fact that the Italian Opera had it London home at the Kings Theatre. Lord Mount Edgcumbe recalled that it was "filled with the richest classes of Society, all, without exception, in full dress universally worn.....presenting a finer spectacle than any other theatre in Europe, which...absolutely astonished the foreign performers"
