Description

A fine early 19th Century Napoleonic French prisoner of war bone and baleen model of H.M.S. Ocean with planked and pinned hull, open gun ports with brass guns, deck fittings including casks, capstans, companionways, decklights etc, bound masts with yards and s’tuns’l booms, standing and running rigging with bone blocks, mounted on a bone and ebony marquetry base within a contemporary strawork case with bone feet, inscribed on stern Ocean.

Provenance

H.M.S. Ocean was a 98 gun second rate ship of the line of approximately 2300 tons, launched from Woolwich Dockyard shortly after the battle of Trafalgar on 24th October 1805. She was the only ship built to her draught and was designed by Sir John Henslow. For the first three years of service she served as the flagship of Vice Admiral Lord Collingwood in the Mediterranean, she undertook other deployment before being reclassified as a 110 gun first rate ship in 1817 where on completion she returned to the Mediterranean until 1830 before returning to England as the Sheerness guardship. She was eventually broken up in 1875.
