George Smith was a genre painter and a pupil at the Royal Academy Schools and under C.W. Cope.
He went on to paint domestic scenes, often of children in the manner of Thomas Webster and F.D. Hardy. He exhibited his work, 19 at the Royal Society of Artists Birmingham; 8 at the Walker Art Gallery Liverpool; 8 at Manchester City Art Gallery; 14 at the Royal Academy;
1 at the Royal Society of British Artists; 15 at the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour; 8 at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters; 1 at Arthur Tooth & Sons Gallery.
It is recorded that George Smith lived at Shotter Mill, Haslemere, Surrey in 1880 and London in 1883.
