Description

A charming observation of sheep with young lambs on a bright, sunny, Yorkshire springtime day by renowned modern British artist Dame Laura Knight.

Laura Johnson was born in Long Eaton, Derbyshire to Charles and Charlotte Johnson. Her father died not long after her birth, and Laura grew up in a family that struggled with financial problems. At the age of 13 she entered the Nottingham School of Art, one of the youngest students ever to join the school, where she met her future husband Harold Knight. In 1898 together with her sister Eva, Laura moved to Staithes, North Yorkshire. Towards the end of 1908 Laura and Harold moved to Cornwall where they stayed for ten years till 1918.

This unique watercolour we believe was painted whilst she was living in Staithes, before she developed her more mature style associated with the watercolours executed in Cornwall. This work will be included in the catalogue raisonné currently being compiled by Dame Laura Knight’s great-nephew, R. John Croft, F.C.A. The painting has a pencil study of a goat verso, visible through a glass panel in the back.
