An Englishman making the ‘Grand Tour’, an essential element of a gentleman’s education in the late Eighteenth and Nineteenth centuries would have viewed this work as part of the prerequisites of a journey to Rome, and this memorable image would have returned as one of his Grand Tour Souveniers.
