Description

The ebonised mahogany and giltwork frame incorporating an Italian scagliola tablet depicting Guido Reni’s ‘Aurora’ painting on the ceiling of the Casino dell’Aurora, in the Palazzo Pallavinci- Rospigliosi in Rome, executed in 1614, is widely regarded as his masterpiece. An Englishman making the ‘Grand Tour’, an essential element of a gentleman’s education in the late Eighteenth and Nineteenth centuries would have viewed this work as part of the prerequisites of a journey to Rome, and this memorable image would have returned as one of his Grand Tour Souveniers.
