Rene Thomsen was a painter of figures, nudes, portraits, landscapes, still-lifes and flowers. He studied under Louis Anquetin and was encouraged in 1920 in his early career by the art critics and art historians Louis Vauxcelles, Elie Faure and Joaquim Gasquet.
He received a commission from the Musee de Versailles for a painting to commemorate the funeral of President Painleve.
In 1921 he became a member of the Salon d’ Automne and took part in various Paris Salons where he achieved considerable success.
He held solo exhibitions of his work in Paris from 1926.
In 1932 he spent time at the Casa Velazquez in Madrid.
