Description

The open back has a scrollwork cresting above a central fielded panel which emulates ‘wainscot’ of the period. The scroll arms are supported by baluster turnings. The seat is faced with a bold moulding. Unsually, a drawer is fitted below the seat with an arched skirt below. Standing on baluster turned legs joined by square stretchers. Excellent colour and patina Last quarter of the 17th century.

This is a transitional piece, displaying many traditional influences from the 1660’s such as the panelled back but features like the scroll arms, and baluster turnings were new fashions from the Continent.
