Description

Although this dish pre-dates the Meiji period by more than a hundred years, they are included in this collection because Audsley-Bowes briefly covered both Imari and Arita export wares in their book. Plate IV shows an Imari charger on the left and a typical Arita charger on the right, both painted with a central vase of flowers within a formal floral border. The characters on the back were often copies of Chinese marks, possibly to make them more saleable in Europe where Japanese porcelain filled the void when Chinese porcelain exports ceased after the fall of the Ming dynasty in 1644
