Description

A good second quarter of the 19th century English ormolu mantel clock, the heavy case cast with foliate scrolls, shells and centred by a mask at the base, the four scroll supports set on to an integral base with well cast concave section, the silvered 3.75 inch dial enclosed by a minute band of large and small dots enclosing the Roman hours and engine turned centre, the particularly fine pierced hear-shaped hands in blued steel, the circular movement with chain fusee and anchor escapement with rise and fall regulation to the pendulum with steel rectangular-section rod and brass bob. The backplate signed Vulliamy London 930. The brass bob lightly scratched 'Burney'.

Provenance

Originally sold to Dr Burney on 23rd December 1826.

Dr Charles Burney was the son of the well known musicologist of the same name who ran a school in Greenwich, and Burney Street is named after him. Number 930 is described in the Vulliamy Clock Book as "new pattern of the 1st" and was Vulliamys response to the Rococo revival fashion that had taken such a hold in fashionable circles in the 1820s.
